"The intent of this work, after the tragedies that shook 20th century Europe was to envisage America as a land of asylum, a receptacle of the Old World's dramas and an optimistic transposition of the brutality and misery of its wars and revolutions.
Exile has imposed on the American people a radical mutation. In return for relinquishing his or her personal history, it offers a new conception of the world founded on the ephemeral, on renunciation and on a perpetual mobility approaching nomadism.
Shaped by their destiny as exiles, Americans find strength and inventiveness in breaking the past. Nostalgia becomes something morbid, while the future seems too distant to dream about in daily life. Instead, the individual is left to create his own present and to inhabit it as best he can. (...)
My photographic approach has been guided by a strong subjective view and ignores the major ideological movements of this "young civiliszation", where information, spirituality, environment, culture, and diplomacy co-exist with consumerism and profit."
