William Ropp, contemporary photographer, artist-author, known for his portrait series, lives and works in France.
William Ropp is often referred to not only as a photographer but as a photographic artist. His style is said to be unique, inimitable and recognizable. His works, because of the impact they produce, can be compared to canvases created by painters: the characters they represent seem to look at the viewer and not the other way around. Ropp is known as a Shadow Sculptor. Famous for his work with the human body and his photographic portraits, he creates particularly expressive relief portraits that appear to be molded with light and shadow. William Ropp made his theatrical debut thirty years ago. Even today, each of his photographs, which is distinguished by its theatrical aspect, is like a silent monologue of the character who appears in it, a solo performance locked inside a moment captured by the photographer.
William Ropp made his first series of black and white photographs in 1988: images of human bodies and their reflections in distorting mirrors. Ropp continued to work in the studio with the human body and experimented with lighting and shooting techniques. In the early 90s he found the style that made him famous. The silhouettes of the models, whose complex and ingenious postures confuse the viewer, are plunged into darkness; then their contours are redrawn with a bright beam of light. The exposure time is extended to 10 minutes, which makes the image a little blurred while emphasizing the essential: eyes, facial expression, line of a shoulder or expressive curve of an arm.
From the mid-2000s Ropp, then a well-known Shadow Sculptor, undertook several trips, each of which resulted in a series of portraits of human beings, Africans and Gypsies, inhabitants of Mexico and Russia, adults and children. In 2010 he switches to color while continuing to focus on portraits. Ropp is the author of several books on the art of photography; his exhibitions and master classes for photographers take place all over the world.
