It can sometimes be thought that the most interesting photographic works are only to be found in the archives of the major city studios, unjustly forgetting the photographers who work in small towns and villages and who, even with more modest means, can produce work of exceptional interest. Such is the case of Virxilio Vieitez, who undoubtedly occupies a prominent place in the history of Spanish photography. He was the photographer par excellence of the towns and villages of the Terra de Montes region. In his portraits, characterised by frontality and staticism, his ability to capture the great expressiveness of his subjects is striking. His work has a clear parallelism with the North American photography of the forties and fifties, of which he was completely unaware.
