As a child, William Ropp devoured books by his great-great-grandfather Louis Jacolliot such as The Jungle Runner, Mysterious Africa and Journey to the Land of the Monkeys - tales of African adventures that filled him with an irrepressible longing for Africa. Having become a photographer, Ropp set out to discover Dogon Country in Mali, then Senegal and finally Ethiopia, where the light and the people allowed him to give full expression to his portrait art. Uthiopia offers another rare encounter, between two art forms and two artists: photography and writing, William Ropp and Philippe Claudel. The latter accompanies Ropp’s pictures with poems that resonate between ‘here’ and ‘elsewhere’. Uthiopia is a journey to a distant land and an inner journey, an expedition and a dream-vision.
